How a Florida native and an all-American Midwest boy fell in love

Alex and Brett had their first date in January 2019, during a brutal Michigan winter. On that dinner date, they sat across the table from each other, discussing life, sharing their stories, and talking about what excites them. Little did they know, it was just the beginning of an incredible adventure.

At the time, Alex was still in his residency. The only predictable thing about his life was his unpredictable schedule! Brett always happily made the effort to meet for breakfast after Alex finished a night shift, and Alex never hesitated to go out for dinner after being up for 24 hours—always with a smile. The one constant, then and now, is that they always show up for each other.

Just before meeting Alex, Brett had adopted Phin, a dachshund. Though small, Phin is mighty and takes up a huge piece of their hearts. He’s traveled across the country with them—from Michigan to Philadelphia to Florida—always eager to give licks and keep watch for Amazon deliveries!

The year 2020, when COVID struck, was a true test of their relationship. Spending all their time outside of work together and isolated from the world, they grew closer. They both developed as individuals and, more importantly, as a couple—learning each other’s love languages and how to communicate effectively and be vulnerable with one another.

In 2020, they moved to Philadelphia for Alex’s fellowship. The transition from suburban life to living in a downtown high-rise was a big adjustment. They spent warm summer nights walking around historic Philadelphia, gaining a new appreciation for the city’s rich heritage.

In 2022, shortly after moving to Florida, they bought their first home. They were thrilled to have a pool and, of course, a little backyard for Phin to enjoy. Brett became the first in his family to move out of state. Despite the distance, Michigan remains special to both of them, and they hope to one day have a little lake house near family and friends.

Together, they have traveled the world, embracing new cultures, trying exotic dishes, and seeing life through a different lens—something they are both passionate about.

As the years pass and they begin to write the next chapter of their lives, they are most excited about starting a family. Their willingness to challenge each other, support each other’s curiosities, and pursue their passions promises many more adventures—and plenty of laughter along the way
